Welcome to Midwifery Department

Hosanna Health Sciences College has been dedicated to Health sciences education training in different academic programs among which midwifery department is the eldest. The department is one of the pioneer departments which has been training competent midwifery professionals in line with the training and health policy of Ethiopia to solve the observed scarcity of health human resource in the region in particular. It has been supporting the FMOH mission of reducing maternal and child deaths nationally. 

Now a day, the department is training midwives both in diploma and degree programs. The department operates the teaching learning process on a modular basis for diploma program and semester based for degree program based on the nature of the implementation of the curriculum. There are 25 faculty members in the department of which 11 MSC, 9 BSC and 5 technical assistants.

The department is contributing its part in producing midwifery professionals for strengthening health human resource for health to achieving the overall goal of reducing maternal and child deaths in the health sector to the levels set by sustainable development goals (SDGs). Midwives essentially constitute “The health workforce” that is essential for delivering comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services. The midwifery department is striving to excel in producing academically qualified, professionally skilled, attitudinally and ethically committed midwifery professionals.

                                Major responsibilities

1. Coordinates and manages department programs, including course planning, and finalizing results.

2. Designs means to improve instructional procedures and implements when approved.

3. Facilitates remedial programs for students with academic deficiency.

4. Keeps academic and disciplinary records of students in the department.

5. Scrutinizes cases of make-up exams in collaboration with the course instructor (s) and arranges makeup exam schedule upon agreement.

6. Ensures that students formally see their academic performances (grades) for every academic assessment.

7. Approves and submits students’ results to the Registrar and Alumni Directorate.

8. Provides the Academic commission with ways and means of solving academic problems upon request or demand forwarded to the department.

9. Ensures that every staff in the department gives timely and appropriate feedback to students after every assessment.

10. Evaluates instructors on performance-based management system.

11. Prepares and submits detailed plan of activities to the Academic Affairs Directorate Director after approval by the department Staffs.

12. Supervises and directs the work of the department.
